Varouj Gumuchian has been an active member of our BEAW group since the beginning and of other community art groups like the Drift for an even longer time. We have been fortunate to have his art installations on display and will have a few more tomorrow for the upcoming MetamorFest 2014 event.

How would you describe your art?

VG- a mixture of found objects and realism combined to challenge viewer

Where do you find inspiration?

VG- from the urban landscape

How did you begin your journey through the arts?

VG- travel and self discovery

What is the story behind one of your pieces that you find particularly meaningful?

VG- as a narrative and commentary on the human scale in city

How would you describe your medium as it compares to others? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

VG- all sorts of materials, inclusive and creative. the aesthetics of beauty and ugliness

Which mentors(s) do you admire the most and what have they taught you?

VG- the Berlin school, Dali, Picasso, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rowe

What challenges and rewards have you found in your community-based art projects?

VG- acceptance and tolerance in subverting the concept of beauty
